Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is a major Air Combat Command base. The 4th Fighter Wing, the host wing at Seymour Johnson, was the first operational F-15E Strike Eagle wing in the Air Force. The wing consists of four groups — 4th Maintenance Group, 4th Mission Support Group, 4th Operations Group and 4th Medical Group — and is assigned over 6,400 military members, about 600 civilians and 96 F-15E Strike Eagles.

The following is a list of events taking place across the wing and in the local community:

- The MPS Career Development, Force Management, Customer Service and Customer Support Offices will close June 15 at 11 a.m. for the FSS Picnic. This includes DEERS (ID Cards). For more information, call 4th FSS at 919-722-8730/8679/8721/8704.

- Due to the Mission Support Group change of command June 22, the dorm parking lot across from the new MSG building needs to be clear of all vehicles from June for 20 -22. Also, Wright Brothers Avenue will be closed June 22 from 8-10 a.m.

A three-hour boot camp challenge was held at the fitness center here to test the level of participants' endurance, June 9.

The challenge consisted of circuit training and cycling on a stationary bike. Both sessions lasted 30 minutes in the first hour, then 15 minutes each hour for the remainder of the contest.

"I am very excited by the turnout," said Mike Unden, 4th Force Support Squadron military fitness specialist. "It's really nice to see the top notch athleticism of the Airmen who have really been pushing themselves for the last year."

The 4th Component Maintenance Squadron egress flight repairs and restores the F-15E Strike Eagle ejection seats June 12.

The number one priority of egress systems Airmen is the serviceability of egress units. These units include the seats inside the cockpit, which in an emergency situation, safely eject the aircrew out of the aircraft and ensures their safe landing by deploying a parachute.

Every three years, these Airmen must strip down, inspect, refurbish and rebuild each egress unit.

Classes help Airmen earn passes

The 4th Force Support Squadron fitness staff offers physical fitness classes throughout the week open to all members of Team Seymour.

These classes include an abdominal, and core, and boot camp workouts led by Mike Unden, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. The classes utilize high-intensity interval training to get Airmen and base personnel into shape and live healthier lives.

The abdominal and core workout is specifically designed to strengthen core muscles in a short amount of time. The 30-minute class is held Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11:45 a.m. in the fitness center.

When things heat up, the 4th Civil Engineer Squadron fire protection flight is the one to call. Flight members are working to take their life-saving skills to another level by preparing for the upcoming Scott Safety Firefighter Combat Challenge.

The competition, which takes place in West Virginia in August, includes Department of Defense and civilian fire fighting teams from all over the world who demonstrate five, life-saving tasks during a timed relay. The tasks include high-rise pack carry, hose hoist, forcible entry, hose advance and victim rescue.

Hurricane season is here and Airmen assigned to the 4th Operations Support and Civil Engineer Squadrons are monitoring the weather and incorporating safety procedures to ensure members of Team Seymour remain safe.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency the Atlantic hurricane season begins in May and ends in November, with the peak season lasting from mid-August to late October. Hurricanes can affect all Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico areas.

The base weather flight does their part by observing weather patterns for potential disasters.
