Staff Sgt. Kellan Gier, 20th Special Operations Squadron flight engineer, received the Hard Charger award Sept. 27 in the Landing Zone at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

The Hard Charger award is reserved for those Airmen who truly excel at their jobs and go above and beyond the call of duty. Gier's superiors nominated him for this award due to his stellar performance during increased responsibility, his on the job knowledge, and his wiliness to go the extra mile.

With 10 temporary duty assignments and 78 days on the road, Gier has become the highest operations tempo enlisted flight engineer in his job with the 20 SOS. He has also groomed four new CV-22 Osprey flight engineers in employment operations, tiered forces training, multilateral training, military free fall qualifications, and other employment exercises, thereby expanding the 20 SOS operational capabilities.

SecDEF: Most furloughed DOD civilians to return to work next week

This post was originally published by Cannon Air Force Base - News

October 6, 2013 in Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico by clevine

Today I am announcing that most DOD civilians placed on emergency furlough during the government shutdown will be asked to return to work beginning next week.

Immediately after President Obama signed the Pay Our Military Act into law, I directed DOD's Acting General Counsel to determine whether we could reduce the number of civilian personnel furloughed due to the shutdown. The Department of Defense consulted closely with the Department of Justice, which expressed its view that the law does not permit a blanket recall of all civilians. However, DOD and DOJ attorneys concluded that the law does allow the Department of Defense to eliminate furloughs for employees whose responsibilities contribute to the morale, well-being, capabilities and readiness of service members.

Remembering those who have come before is a long-lasting tradition in the military. Members of Cannon took time from their day to ruck and pay tribute to those who were captured, missing or gave their lives while fighting for a greater cause.

"We never forget those who have yet to come home," said Master Sgt. Jason Shaffer, 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron quality control NCO in charge. "By conducting a ruck march, we honor events like the Bataan Death March; it's a small act that shows a token of appreciation and respect to our POW/MIA family."
