Cannon cuts ribbon on new dorms

Col. Tony Bauernfeind, 27th Special Operations Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Paul Henderson, 27 SOW command chief, officially cut the ribbon on a new dormitory for Air Commandos Sept. 6 at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. The $12.4 million project was initiated in April 2012.

With the rising number of young Airmen assigned to Cannon, the completion of a new dormitory building is a welcome sight for base residents.

Based on the Air Force's Dorms-4-Airmen concept, the building will boast 96 individual rooms, each with its own private bathroom. Four rooms will make up a quad unit, and each unit is equipped with a full kitchen including an oven, microwave and refrigerator, as well as a washer and dryer. There is a small common area in each building and private personal storage space for each resident. To top it off, each room is furnished with brand-new furniture.

Cannon prepares to honor POW/MIA comrades

Each year, ceremonies affirming the commitment to bring home America's Prisoner of War and Missing in Action service members are held across the country on military installations and ships at sea; at state capitals, schools and churches; by national veteran and civic organizations, police and fire departments; and a plethora of other agencies.

Joining in this collective veneration, Air Commandos at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., have the opportunity to participate in several activities commemorating America's lost, courtesy of the base Air Force Sergeants Association, Chapter 1255. Activities will include a ruck march, monument clean up, name reading vigil, remembrance luncheon and retreat ceremony.

Cannon conducts deployment readiness exercise

The 27th Special Operations Wing conducted a base-wide deployment exercise Aug. 26-27 at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

Air Commandos were prepared to deploy as they were in-processed by members of the 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron military personnel flight and put on a bus that would transport deploying members to an aircraft.

Squadrons and agencies across Cannon took part in the simulated scenarios to better prepare personnel for potential real-world events.

Dressed to the nines and encircled by family and friends, Cannon's newest master sergeant selects were inaugurated into the topmost tier of the enlisted pyramid during the Senior NCO Induction Ceremony Aug. 23 at the Landing Zone at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

The purpose of the SNCO Induction Ceremony is twofold: first, to formally recognize Airmen for their achievements and provide newly selected master sergeants with a comprehensive view of their increased supervisory, leadership and managerial responsibilities; and secondly, to afford leadership, peers and family the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of their respective Air Commandos.

522 SOS relocates

Members of the 522nd Special Operations Squadron, charged with the responsibility of providing rapid global response supporting Air Force, joint and coalition special operations forces by conducting air refueling of vertical lift assets and infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of special operations forces, have abandoned their previous operations center in favor of a newly minted, high end hangar.

Prior to the move, the 522 SOS doubled up with the 27th Special Operations Group before inhabiting a transitional space, which members affectionately dubbed the Combat Doublewide.

More than 60 members of the 27th Special Operations Wing and local community crowded onto the deck of the DZ Pool for the first of three grueling legs of competition at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. Aug. 24.

With sweat and dust on their faces and the unmistakable glint of competition in their eyes, fitness enthusiasts of all ages came out to participate in the mini triathlon which featured a 300-meter lap swim, 8.5-mile bike ride and 3.2-mile sprint to the finish.

Spectators looked on intently as competitors in each of the nine heats clambered onto the pool deck soaking wet and exhausted, before making their way to the bike rack for the second obstacle of the day. After putting rubber to road, bikers were assaulted by heat, bugs and renegade pebbles as they navigated Cannon's winding streets. Preparing to start the last leg of the race, participants found themselves back on solid ground, but with the unpredictability of wobbly, spent legs.

U.S. Congressman Ben Lujan, from New Mexico, met with 27th Special Operations Wing leadership at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Aug. 23. During his visit to the base, Lujan met with, and received a mission brief from Col. Tony Bauernfeind, 27 SOW commander, and observed various ongoing construction projects from the vantage point of the control tower with Lt. Col. Anthony Figiera, 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron commander. Lujan's visit to Cannon allowed him to gain a better understanding of current 27 SOW mission operations.

More than 150 Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., youth and volunteers participated in the New Mexico Space Academy hosted here by the New Mexico Museum of Space History Aug. 11-12.

The event provided the dependents of servicemen and women the opportunity to diversify their interests and discover a love for science.

"When the Company Grade Officers' Council hosted the spring sports clinic, we noticed a desire from the community to not only provide physical activities for Cannon kids, but also for education-centered events," said Capt. Joshua Payne, CGOC vice president and lead organizer for the space academy. "This was an opportunity for our children to gain a love for the sciences through fun and exploration."

Casualty evacuation exercise at Cannon

A casualty evacuation exercise was conducted Aug. 16 at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

A two-part scenario, the exercise included a main incident and secondary incident. The exercise consisted of a patient at the 27th Special Operations Medical Group becoming disgruntled and having to be subdued. A simulated fire was then set and the fire department responded, evacuated personnel from the building, and neutralized the fire threat. The 27 SOMDG then moved their base of operations to an alternate location. In addition, a casualty evacuation was called in and medical teams responded, providing a simulated MEDEVAC flight to a different facility.

Commissary to return to normal hours of operation

According a statement by the Defense Commissary Agency, military commissaries worldwide, to include the commissary at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., are scheduled to resume pre-furlough hours of operation beginning the week of Aug. 18 through 24.

The DeCA announcement comes on the heels of the Aug. 6 Department of Defense decision to curtail furloughs of its civilian workforce from 11 to six days.

"This is welcome news for us all," said Joesph Jeu, DeCA director and CEO. "Our stores will return to their regular schedules after Aug. 17. I encourage our patrons to check the DeCA website for their commissary's operating hours."

Airmen from Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., made waves at the DZ Pool, August 10. The luau-themed party allowed them to partake in the aquatic center's features until almost midnight.
All donning leis, the Airmen floated around on inner tubes, splashed around in the deep end and took turns diving off the diving board.

The night's soundtrack was provided by Master Sgt. Edward Fields, 27th Special Operations Maintenance Squadron maintenance operations flight chief. As his alter ego DJ Awethentic, he filled everyone's ears with the tunes from today's latest music hits.

Competition anyone?

With feet pounding and hearts racing, the contestants of this year's Weapons and Ammo, WAMMO competition, raced into action Aug. 9 at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

The competition consisted of a series of games and challenges between the 27th Special Operations Maintenance Squadron's munitions and weapons flights. They have long shared a friendly rivalry and named the competition by mashing together the names of their flights.

Featured at this event were a game of tug-o-war, three different running relays, a cross-tie pulling competition, volleyball, flag football, ultimate frisbee and dodge ball tournaments as well as a chance to throw pies in 27 SOMXS leadership's faces. The event, which started at seven in the morning, included a free breakfast and lunch for the participants with food provided by the International House of Pancakes and Quiznos.

A&FRC holds Back to School Bash

The Landing Zone and Airman & Family Readiness Center co-hosted the 2013 "Back to School Bash" at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Aug. 9.

Cannon families and local school officials came together to provide information, answer questions and strengthen the bond between the base and surrounding educational institutions for a successful school year.

"This is a community initiative to get families and local schools to come out and communicate with each other," said Master Sgt. Richard Gomez, A&FRC. "Events like this are a community effort and won't have future success unless people continue to come out and support them."

Tania Glenn, Doctor of Psychology and Licensed Clinical Social Worker, delivered a feelings-free, scientific analysis of the human body's physiological response to high-stress situations to help Air Commandos understand their biological processes downrange during a briefing at the Landing Zone at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Aug. 5.

Glenn, who specializes in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in service members and first responders, described the chemical reactions that take place within the body when it experiences stress, defined as a state of physical or emotional activation. Air Commandos learned the biological cues that trigger phenomena such as the fog of war and fight or flight syndrome.

Prescribed burns for Melrose Air Force Range

To continue to reduce the risk of wildfires in eastern New Mexico, the 27th Special Operations Wing will conduct a series of prescribed controlled burns at Melrose Air
Force Range, N.M., during the next 90 days as weather permits.

These fires clear the amount of vegetation in targeted areas and help reduce the risk of wildfires caused by training or by natural causes, such as lightning. Exact dates for prescribed burns cannot be provided, as highly variable weather conditions will affect timing, and they will only be conducted under safe, optimum conditions.
