522 SOS conducts joint training

The 522nd Special Operations Squadron ran their first joint training mission Sept. 26 over northern New Mexico.

The 522 SOS real-world goal is to plan, prepare and execute missions to directly support special operations commanders through day and night low level infiltration/exfiltration, helicopter/tilt-rotor aerial refueling, and aerial delivery resupply of special operations forces. They support many special operations units from all branches of the military while operating the MC-130J Commando II aircraft.

DOD Continues Prudent Planning for Government Shutdown

DOD officials believe a government shutdown will not occur when current spending authority expires Sept. 30th, but continue prudent planning in case it does.

Deputy Defense Secretary Ash Carter released a memo today entitled Guidance for Continuation of Operations in the Absence of Available Appropriations.

An attachment to the memo provides instructions on how operations and personnel would be affected if Congress fails to approve a continuing resolution or an appropriations bill in time for the new fiscal year that begins Tuesday.

Air Commandos from the 27th Special Operations Wing remembered the sacrifices made by Prisoner of War and Missing in Action service members by hosting a POW/MIA week. One of the events held was a POW/MIA Vigil Run Sept. 19-20, during which Airmen came together in teams to run on the track here carrying the POW/MIA flag continuously for 24 hours.

Ruck march kicks off POW/MIA week

The 27th Special Operations Wing kicked off Prisoner of War/Missing In Action week with a ruck march Sept. 16, 2013 at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

Remembering those who have come before is a long-lasting tradition in the military. Members of Cannon took time from their day to ruck and pay tribute to those who were captured, missing or gave their lives while fighting for a greater cause.

"We never forget those who have yet to come home," said Master Sgt. Jason Shaffer, 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron quality control NCO in charge. "By conducting a ruck march, we honor events like the Bataan Death March; it's a small act that shows a token of appreciation and respect to our POW/MIA family."

Local veterans and Air Commandos stood at attention as the familiar notes of the national anthem reverberated through a loudspeaker, enveloping the assembly as it has for more than 230 years, and signifying the commencement of a Prisoner of War/Missing in Action retreat ceremony Sept. 20 at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

In a gesture as timeless as Old Glory itself, a flight of uniformed Airmen formed ranks and rendered a salute in the shadow of the POW/MIA flag as the nation's colors were lowered into the white-gloved hands of Cannon's honor guard.

New honorary commanders announced

As outgoing honorary commanders stepped down, six new individuals were announced to be taking their place Sept. 14 at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

The 27th Special Operations Wing Honorary Command Program places prominent members of the surrounding community with Cannon leadership to give the locals an opportunity to learn more about the military culture and mission.

The new honorary commanders are assigned to the wing commander, command chief and a commander from the four groups within the 27 SOW. Each has been given a title based on who they are matched with.

Air Force Ball celebrates 66 years of history

Air Commandos from Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., celebrated 66 years of Air Force History Sept. 1 at the Air Force Ball held at the Clovis Civic Center in Clovis, N.M.

The ball is an annual celebration held in honor of the day the Air Force became a separate branch of service. It is an Air Force-wide event that allows for the remembrance of all the Air Force's trials and triumphs throughout the years.

This year's event included a Prisoner of War/Missing in Action tribute from the base honor guard, a traditional cake-cutting, and a video highlighting Cannon's history put together by the 27th Special Operations Wing Public Affairs Office.

318 SOS gains new mission, new platform

The 318th Special Operations Squadron welcomed the arrival of the U-28A, its newest aircraft, Aug. 30 at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

The Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance mission-based aircraft will make a permanent home with the 318 SOS, which specializes in delivering rapid special operations airlift support across the globe. The plane arrived from Hurlburt Field, Fla., on the morning of Aug. 30 and was greeted by Col. Tony Bauernfeind, 27th Special Operations Wing commander, Col. Sean Farrell, 27th Special Operations Group commander, and members of the 318 SOS.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is scheduled to officially kick-off Sept. 16 at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., with a scheduled signing of a proclamation, dessert tasting, piñata breaking, entertainment and finger foods.

Since its inception in 1968, National Hispanic Heritage Month has been recognized from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. This cultural event has been observed to celebrate Independence Day for Latin American countries and to commemorate the contributions made to this country by those with Hispanic heritage.

Cannon cuts ribbon on new dorms

Col. Tony Bauernfeind, 27th Special Operations Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Paul Henderson, 27 SOW command chief, officially cut the ribbon on a new dormitory for Air Commandos Sept. 6 at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. The $12.4 million project was initiated in April 2012.

With the rising number of young Airmen assigned to Cannon, the completion of a new dormitory building is a welcome sight for base residents.

Based on the Air Force's Dorms-4-Airmen concept, the building will boast 96 individual rooms, each with its own private bathroom. Four rooms will make up a quad unit, and each unit is equipped with a full kitchen including an oven, microwave and refrigerator, as well as a washer and dryer. There is a small common area in each building and private personal storage space for each resident. To top it off, each room is furnished with brand-new furniture.

Each year, ceremonies affirming the commitment to bring home America's Prisoner of War and Missing in Action service members are held across the country on military installations and ships at sea; at state capitals, schools and churches; by national veteran and civic organizations, police and fire departments; and a plethora of other agencies.

Joining in this collective veneration, Air Commandos at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., have the opportunity to participate in several activities commemorating America's lost, courtesy of the base Air Force Sergeants Association, Chapter 1255. Activities will include a ruck march, monument clean up, name reading vigil, remembrance luncheon and retreat ceremony.

Cannon conducts deployment readiness exercise

The 27th Special Operations Wing conducted a base-wide deployment exercise Aug. 26-27 at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

Air Commandos were prepared to deploy as they were in-processed by members of the 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron military personnel flight and put on a bus that would transport deploying members to an aircraft.

Squadrons and agencies across Cannon took part in the simulated scenarios to better prepare personnel for potential real-world events.

Dressed to the nines and encircled by family and friends, Cannon's newest master sergeant selects were inaugurated into the topmost tier of the enlisted pyramid during the Senior NCO Induction Ceremony Aug. 23 at the Landing Zone at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M.

The purpose of the SNCO Induction Ceremony is twofold: first, to formally recognize Airmen for their achievements and provide newly selected master sergeants with a comprehensive view of their increased supervisory, leadership and managerial responsibilities; and secondly, to afford leadership, peers and family the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of their respective Air Commandos.

522 SOS relocates

Members of the 522nd Special Operations Squadron, charged with the responsibility of providing rapid global response supporting Air Force, joint and coalition special operations forces by conducting air refueling of vertical lift assets and infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of special operations forces, have abandoned their previous operations center in favor of a newly minted, high end hangar.

Prior to the move, the 522 SOS doubled up with the 27th Special Operations Group before inhabiting a transitional space, which members affectionately dubbed the Combat Doublewide.
