Westover ARB is the nation’s largest Air Force Reserve base, and is home to the Air Force’s largest cargo aircraft, the C-5 Galaxy. More than 2,700 military and civilian workers are assigned to Westover’s 439th Airlift Wing, a unit of the Air Force Reserve Command.

Westover firefighters extinguish blaze

Fire broke out at a company in the Westover Industrial Park that repairs and recaps tires at approximately 6:30 p.m. March 27.

Westover firefighters responded to a mutual-aid request from Chicopee and were on scene, within 8 minutes. Westover was contacted because of their proximity to the incident and their foam trailer that is designed to extinguish fires from jet fuel.

Officials believed the business, Bendag Co., located approximately one mile off base, contained large amounts of solvents and tire shreddings.

Heroes return home

Airmen from the 439th security forces returned home March 26 after a 180 day deployment to Afghanistan.

More than one dozen security force members were tasked with assisting the U.S. Army as Joint Expeditionary Tasked Airman.

The team has been deployed since September to Afghanistan. By the end of the tour the security forces members come home with an impressive record: three quarterly award winners and eight recommendations from the Air Force's 466th Air Expeditionary Squadron to receive medals for selfless devotion to duty. If that wasn't enough, they have saved lives.

Family Fitness Day

A Family Fitness Day is scheduled to celebrate the month of the military children. This event will take place on April 9, 2011 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Westover ARB gym, ellipse and the base hangar.

The day's events will include face painting, clowns, bounce houses, yoga, Boot camp by the Marines, football toss, basketball, lunch, make your own dog tags, prizes, obstacles courses, dodgeball and a 1 mile parent and child run/walk.

The race will begin at 8:45 a.m. with registration at 8:00 a.m. in front of the gym. Children under 13-years-old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the entire event.

COPS AFGHANISTAN: Westover’s security forces save lives, move mountains

More than a dozen Westover security forces Airmen loaded on a plane, stowed their gear, and calmly took their seats.

They were focused on deploying to Afghanistan for a unique mission to assist the U.S. Army as Joint Expeditionary Tasked Airman that required hand-picked personnel to carry out military police duties.

"I was both anxious and excited," said Senior Airman Bryan Healy, a 439th Security Forces team member. "I have wanted to deploy and do my part since I joined the Air Force, and I knew this was an opportunity to put all of my training to use and to contribute to the hard work and sacrifices of all those who have gone before me."

For Christians throughout the world, Ash Wednesday and the Season and discipline of Lent are here. Many times, we can be reluctant to enter into the discipline of Lent because we have been trained over the years from our youth to think that this Season and discipline of Lent is only about giving up things we enjoy doing in everyday life, such as chocolate, coffee, French fries, favorite snacks, eating between meals, and the like. Giving up the things that we enjoy can provide the discipline of mind, body, and soul to reach higher levels of both love and union with God as well as greater love of neighbor.

Westover Fun Run

As the fog burned off the flight line, more than 50 people gathered around the Westover Fitness center preparing for the St. Patrick's Day 5K Fun Run here March 17.

William Craig said this was his first run since a recent surgery, and he was using the run to get back into shape.

Other runners included Marines, Army, civilian and Air force.

The race began around 8 a.m. in front of the Fitness Center. All racers showed their support of the holiday by wearing green. With the blink of an eye and the shout of "3, 2, 1 GO," the racers were off.

Festivities are scheduled across the Pioneer Valley to celebrate the men and woman who served. In Holyoke, a parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at 310 Appleton Street on Monday, May 30 then at 11 a.m. Paul Barabani, Holyoke Soldiers Home's new superintendent, will speak. AFA and HRDC to combine efforts to help local students “blast off”

Westover's chapters of the Air Force Association and the Human Resource Development Council are working together to offer 25 local middle school students the opportunity to increase their knowledge of aeronautics and get some valuable mentoring from positive role models.

The Patriot Propulsion Program will bring volunteers from both organizations to the STEM Middle Academy in Springfield, MA. During four after-school sessions in late March and early April, the volunteers will instruct the students on basic aeronautics and assist each student in building their own model rocket.

Officials extend community assessment

Officials are extending the opportunity to participate in the 2011 Air Force Community Assessment through April 3.

More than 350,000 active-duty members, reservists and spouses as well as all appropriated fund civilian employees were randomly selected to participate in the anonymous survey. Those selected began receiving an e-mail invitation Jan. 30 to participate in the survey. Spouses were mailed a postcard.

Officials said the secure notice is being sent from the consulting firm ICF International and addressed from AFCASurvey@icfi.com.
