The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks a monumental time in the history of mankind. On that day, November 11, 1918, an armistice went into effect between the Allied Forces and Germany, effectively marking an end of hostilities in the First World War.

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919, as the first commemoration of Armistice Day by stating, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory..."

The Air Force Distributed Common Ground System began its seventh detailed examination into its operations Oct. 28, led by the 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing here.

The DCGS is the Air Force's globally networked ISR weapon system, providing near real time intelligence to battlefield commanders 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The week-long evaluation, called Sentinel Focus, has four main objectives:

More than 100 thousand visitors looked to the skies this weekend as the C-17 Globemaster III demonstration team flew over Osan Air Base Oct. 20 and 21.

The annual "Air Power Day" air show attracted aviation enthusiasts from around the country. The C-17 Globemaster III demonstration team, assigned to the 535th Airlift Squadron, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, traveled more than 5,000 miles to showcase one of the Air Force's most capable cargo aircraft.

"The [purpose of the] C-17 demonstration is to project a positive image of the U.S. Air Force throughout the Pacific area of responsibility," said Capt. Chris Ross, a C-17 demonstration team pilot assigned to the 535 AS. "It's to show our capabilities to our allies and strengthen international ties by demonstrating the C-17's capabilities."

New hours at the 15th Medical Group

The 15th Medical Group will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-to-Friday starting November 5th. It will be closed on federal holidays, Pacific Air Forces family days and the third Thursday of each month. The clinic does not provide emergency services so please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for any emergency care needed. If medical or dental care is needed outside of normal hours or on the weekend, please call 808-448-6000 and select option two when prompted. This will redirect to an after-hours line that will contact the provider on call who will assist with your urgent care needs.

Flu clinic for beneficiaries on October 27

Complimentary annual influenza vaccinations will be available to TRICARE beneficiaries in the Hickam BXtra from 9am to 2pm on Saturday, Oct 27.

The flu vaccinations will be provided at no cost to active duty military, military retirees, and their families on a walk-in basis. TRICARE beneficiaries are requested to bring their current Department of Defense ID cards to verify eligibility.

Flu season typically begins on Oct 1 each year and continues through the winter and spring months in the following year. However, Hawaii has an extended flu season in comparison to the continental United States.

Women’s Memorial celebrates 15th anniversary

The 15th anniversary of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Washington, D.C. will be commemorated Sunday.

The Women's Memorial honors all women who have shown courage, selflessness and dedication in service to the nation during times of conflict and peace and is located at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery.

"Women had lagged behind in recognition for our service to America," said Debra Straight, vice president of the Federal Women's Program at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. "I was thrilled to be a [Women's Memorial] charter member and I attended the dedication ceremony in 1997 with fellow service members and mentors. It brought together women who served our nation in many capacities and from many eras, even World War I women."

Medal of Honor recipients visit with Hickam Airmen

Four Medal of Honor recipients visited Hickam Oct. 4 to visit with Airmen tell their tales from their time in service.

The Medal of Honor recipients shared stories from their time in the service with Airmen at the Pacific Air Forces Headquarters building and at a static C-17 Globemaster III, KC-135 Stratotanker and an F-22 Raptor. Three of the four recipients served in the U.S. Army and one served in the U.S. Air Force; ranging from the Korean to Vietnam Wars.

Sgt. 1st Class (Ret.) Ronald Rosser was the first to tell his story to the Airmen; describing the actions he performed as a young Army corporal in Korea which earned him his Medal of Honor.
