Hickam’s heroes: Airmen to return to flagpole

As the years pass, fewer men and women who survived the horrific events of Dec. 7, 1941, return to the place where their lives changed forever.

For the 71st time, Airmen, civilians, family and friends will gather around the flagpole Dec. 7 to salute and remember the ones who gave their lives on that infamous day. Among the crowd, several men will be honored for their role in surviving the attacks and fighting for their country.

"As these men get older, their tales die with them," said Jessie Higa, Hickam History Club president. "Those who remain can't travel the distance from their home town any longer because of their age and variety of health issues."

15 OG initiates orientation and incentive flight program

The 15th Operations Group will kick off an orientation and incentive flight program Dec. 6 to provide flying opportunities for Airmen from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii who do not normally have the chance to fly.

In an effort to establish a standardized program while minimizing the impact on required training, the 15th OG will execute quarterly flights for Joint Base units, primarily Airmen from the 15th Wing and 647th Air Base Group.

"This program serves a few different purposes," said Lt. Col. Brian Deutsch, 96th Air Refueling Squadron commander. "First is the orientation side. We regularly work with command post and ground agencies, but the Airmen have never been up in the air to see what we do. The other side of it is the incentive portion. This is for commanders to pick their star performers and say, 'hey, you've done a good job' and reward them with the opportunity to fly."

The holidays will be a little cheerier for single Airmen living in unaccompanied housing at joint base and deployed Airmen and their families, thanks to the efforts of the 15th Wing and their annual Cookie Caper project.

Spouses and personnel from the 15th Operations Group also joined together with the Friends of Hickam to support operation Cookie Caper.

Donations of homemade cookies were provided by members of the local community, including 15th Wing spouses, elementary schools, Girl Scouts, banks and businesses. Elementary school children decorated each paper bag holding the homemade cookies.

Season’s Greetings from COMPACAF

December 5, 2012 in Hawaii, Hickam Air Force Base by clevine

Gillian and I are happy to be stationed in the Pacific theater once again, celebrating the holiday season alongside the rest of our PACAF family.

While this is a time of celebration, we want to shift our focus from celebrating 'with' our families to actually celebrating them.

Quite often, mission requirements force us to make sacrifices throughout our careers. Whether it is missing birthdays and anniversaries, recitals and graduations, or weddings and funerals, we need to take any and every opportunity to thank our families for their constant and unwavering support.

Only 92 of the original 189 Army Air Forces Airmen killed at Hickam Field during the Dec. 7, 1941, attacks on military installations of Oahu remain on the island where war found them when they weren't looking for it.

A group of ten Hickam Airmen, teenagers, spouses and a Sailor volunteered to make sure those who remain were personally honored in the only way they knew how and mark the 71st year since their day of infamy by placing an American flag, a handmade lei and render a salute to each gravesite at the National Cemetery of the Pacific as a gesture of remembrance and honor Dec. 2, 2012.

Commander’s guidance on marijuana decriminalization

This post was originally published by 15th Wing - 15th Wing Top Stories

November 19, 2012 in Hawaii, Hickam Air Force Base by clevine

Recently, Colorado and Washington State decriminalized all uses of marijuana. However, as Airmen in the United States Air Force and members of the 15th Wing, use of marijuana is incompatible with military service regardless of whether you are travelling through or on temporary duty in the states that have decriminalized its use.

Furthermore, marijuana use, possession, manufacture, distribution, introduction, importation and exportation are all still prohibited under Article 112a of the UCMJ and Federal laws that criminalize marijuana offenses are still in effect.

This post was originally published by 15th Wing - 15th Wing Top Stories

November 11, 2012 in Hawaii, Hickam Air Force Base by clevine

Late in the evening on Nov. 6, as many in the country were watching the waning moments of the 2012 Presidential election, a flight crew from the 535th Airlift Squadron here began spinning up for the final legs of a 32-thousand mile, 11-day crucible to transfer equipment from a highly publicized Missile Defense Agency test in the South Pacific to locations in Asia and the American mainland.

While the ballistic missile defense test itself represents the cutting edge of American technological capability, the redeployment of its component systems provided a glimpse at another capability unique to the U.S. Air Force; the ability to move assets to any point on the globe within days via the C-17 Globemaster III.
