PACAF commander addresses looming fiscal constraints during Hickam base visit

The Air force is likely to face more budgetary cuts and will have to make some difficult choices over the coming years said Gen. Herbert J. Carlisle, the Pacific Air Forces commander, while speaking to Airmen here Monday.

His central theme was that the continual push to do more with less has reached its limit of sustainability and from the ground up the Air Force will need to look in a new direction towards task prioritization.

"We can no longer do more with less; we already have more missions than we have people," said Carlisle. "We need to do less with less, but the things that we do not do need to be the least important."

Hickam Field survivor journeys ‘home’ for last time

This post was originally published by 15th Wing - 15th Wing Top Stories

For the final time, Senior Master Sgt. (Ret.) Raymond Lee Perry has returned "home" to Hickam Field.

Seventy-one years to the day, Dec. 7, 2012, Perry's family culminated a journey which began with the attacks on military installations around Oahu by bringing his remains back to Hickam one last time to attend the Dec. 7, 1941 Remembrance Ceremony, and then say their final goodbyes as they spread his ashes in the waters of the Pearl Harbor Channel near the Hickam Officer's Club. The Federal Fire Department also performed the Fireman's Last Call, a toll of the bell 15 times in honor of Perry. This is the first time a Hickam Field survivor has had his ashes spread at Hickam.

December 7, 2012 in Hawaii, Hickam Air Force Base by clevine

F-22 Raptor pilots from the 19th and 199th Fighter Squadrons here brought home a familiar mission Dec. 6 when they retook the responsibility of guarding Hawaii's skies through the Aerospace Control Alert mission.

On Aug. 6, 2010, the Montana Air National Guard's 186th Fighter Squadron from the 120th Fighter Wing based in Great Falls, gave the Hawaii Air National Guard's 199th FS a "breather" as they transitioned from the F-15 Eagle to the F-22 Raptor. Since then, the 199th FS has worked to posture itself to retake the mission, with the help of a total force integration partnership with the recently stood-up 19th FS owned and operated by active duty Airmen of the 15th Wing.

December 7, 2012 in Hawaii, Hickam Air Force Base by clevine

On Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941 at 7:55 a.m. the largest airborne attack force ever assembled by the Imperial Japanese Navy struck Oahu's military installations and plunged the United States into World War II aiming to cripple the U.S. fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor and prevent American involvement in Japanese military engagements in the Pacific theater.

Today, multiple generations of Airmen gathered to remember sacrifices made and honor the legacy emblazoned upon the heritage of Airmen both past, present, and future.

Commentary: Lessons of December 7th remain relevant

This post was originally published by 15th Wing - 15th Wing Top Stories

December 7, 2012 in Hawaii, Hickam Air Force Base by clevine

Today marks the 71st anniversary of the Imperial Japanese Navy's attack on Hickam Field and Pearl Harbor. Though the fires of the ensuing World War have long grown cold, the lessons learned on that harrowing day reach through history and cascade onto the shores of present-day Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

One must only look at the bullet-pocked buildings here at Hickam and the sunken ships in Pearl Harbor to realize that a moment's lapse in readiness can result in a lifetime of pain and regret.

Hickam’s heroes: Airmen to return to flagpole

This post was originally published by 15th Wing - 15th Wing Top Stories

December 6, 2012 in Hawaii, Hickam Air Force Base by clevine

As the years pass, fewer men and women who survived the horrific events of Dec. 7, 1941, return to the place where their lives changed forever.

For the 71st time, Airmen, civilians, family and friends will gather around the flagpole Dec. 7 to salute and remember the ones who gave their lives on that infamous day. Among the crowd, several men will be honored for their role in surviving the attacks and fighting for their country.

"As these men get older, their tales die with them," said Jessie Higa, Hickam History Club president. "Those who remain can't travel the distance from their home town any longer because of their age and variety of health issues."

15 OG initiates orientation and incentive flight program

This post was originally published by 15th Wing - 15th Wing Top Stories

December 6, 2012 in Hawaii, Hickam Air Force Base by clevine

The 15th Operations Group will kick off an orientation and incentive flight program Dec. 6 to provide flying opportunities for Airmen from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii who do not normally have the chance to fly.

In an effort to establish a standardized program while minimizing the impact on required training, the 15th OG will execute quarterly flights for Joint Base units, primarily Airmen from the 15th Wing and 647th Air Base Group.

"This program serves a few different purposes," said Lt. Col. Brian Deutsch, 96th Air Refueling Squadron commander. "First is the orientation side. We regularly work with command post and ground agencies, but the Airmen have never been up in the air to see what we do. The other side of it is the incentive portion. This is for commanders to pick their star performers and say, 'hey, you've done a good job' and reward them with the opportunity to fly."

December 6, 2012 in Hawaii, Hickam Air Force Base by clevine

The holidays will be a little cheerier for single Airmen living in unaccompanied housing at joint base and deployed Airmen and their families, thanks to the efforts of the 15th Wing and their annual Cookie Caper project.

Spouses and personnel from the 15th Operations Group also joined together with the Friends of Hickam to support operation Cookie Caper.

Donations of homemade cookies were provided by members of the local community, including 15th Wing spouses, elementary schools, Girl Scouts, banks and businesses. Elementary school children decorated each paper bag holding the homemade cookies.
