Immunization clinics prepare kids for school

For parents, the month of August is preceded by a flurry activity including, but not limited to, purchasing children's school supplies and back-to-school clothing for the new school year.

For medical providers at the Hickam, Makalapa and Shipyard clinics, the month of August -recognized as National Immunizations Awareness Month (NIAM) - is the beginning of a season filled with immunizations and physicals for school aged children.

According to the Hawaii State Department of Health, children entering kindergarten through high school are required to have received vaccinations for DTaP (Diphtheria-Tetanus-Acellular Pertussis), Polio, MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella), Hepatitis B, and Varicella (chickenpox). Two doses of the Varicella vaccine are required if the first dose was administered after a child's thirteenth birthday.

The Federal Women's Program at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii celebrated Women's Equality Day on August 14 with a brown bag luncheon highlighting the history of voting rights and the voter registration process.

Col. Eva Jenkins, Commander of the 692d Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group, was the keynote speaker for the event. Capt. Eric Ziessler of the 735th Airlift Squadron, the JBPHH installation assistant voting action officer, provided integral advice related to voting at the upcoming national elections.

PACAF demo team participates at Yokota Friendship Festival, Japan

Mass crowds of Japanese citizens and aviation enthusiasts flooded the flightline of Yokota Air Base, Japan, to partake in the annuual Japanese-American Friendship Festival Aug. 18-19.

During the festival, the Yokota Air Base flightline hosted more than 200,000 people who came to enjoy the festival. Thousands of which, passed through the static display of the C-17 Globemaster III Pacific Air Forces Demonstration aircraft, based out of the 535th Airlift Squadron, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.

The quiet Hawaiian morning was interrupted by the sound of screaming and the constant boom of someone banging on doors for a very surprised group of Warriors.
Former Air Force and Navy basic military training instructors gave a very special wake-up call to the University of Hawaii football team shortly after 5 a.m. Aug. 14 during day two of their stay at Hickam Field.

"I was just lying in bed and I heard pounding and thought it was a joke," said senior defensive end Paipai Falemalu. "Then I heard all the people yelling and I thought, 'This is gonna be fun.'"

Loud music boomed across the practice field. High pitched whistles periodically pierced ear drums. The distinctive smack of helmet-on-helmet collisions popped between the whistle blasts, which were followed by screams of frustration or maybe elation. The sound of jet engines momentarily drowned all of it out.

Due to the University of Hawaii dormitories being cleaned and prepared for the start of the fall season, the Warriors had to seek accommodations elsewhere to continue their training camp Aug. 13-17. They found a new home for a week at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

15th Medical Operations Squadron Welcomes New Commander

Command of the 15th Medical Operations Squadron transitioned from Lt. Col. René Chadwell to Lt. Col. Michael Fea during a change of command ceremony on August 2 at Atterbury Circle on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

Col. Robie Hughes, 15th Medical Group commander, presided over the ceremony and highlighted Chadwell's accomplishments over the past two years as the 15th MDOS commander and Biomedical Sciences Corps advisor.

"Our mission is to take care of our people," said Hughes. "René has invested her heart and soul [in her people]. Her true gift is to mentor ... she is a spectacular, full-throttle leader who will be dearly missed."

Synthetic drugs create issues in Air Force

Stories across America have described strange and bizarre incidents of people doing even stranger and more bizarre acts while high on synthetic stimulants.

In Miami, a 31-year-old man attacked a 65-year-old homeless man, stripped off all his clothes, and chewed off sum 80 percent of his face. Reports from onlookers characterized him as a "zombie," behaving as if he were under the control of some evil or demonic possession.

In West Virginia a man high on bath salts was found wandering the woods in lingerie after he allegedly stabbed a goat. In Texas, police were called to respond to a father of two, who allegedly smoked spice and was out of control. When the police arrived, the man was sitting on the front porch covered in blood and fur where he had eaten the family pet.

Hickam Field survivor to cut cake at Air Force Ball

The pockmarked scarred buildings on Hickam are a vivid reminder of the physical and mental scars suffered by the men and women who witnessed the attacks here more than 70 years ago.

A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, who survived the Dec. 7, 1941, attacks on Hickam Field and Pearl Harbor, will return to the Hawaiian island of Oahu to see the place he was forced to become a man so early in his life.

Durward Swanson, a 91-year-old native of Georgia, is returning to be the guest of honor and the "oldest Airman" at the 65th Air Force Ball, scheduled for Sept. 14, 2012, at the Hawaiian Hilton Resort in Waikiki. He will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the youngest Airman at Hickam Field and cut the Air Force's birthday cake with an honor guard saber.

Celebrating women’s equality Aug. 14

Each year, August 26 is proclaimed by the Commander-in-Chief as "Women's Equality Day."

Women's Equality Day was selected to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which granted women the right to vote in 1920.

This year, the Federal Women's Program, here, will celebrate Women's Equality Day on August 14, with a brown bag luncheon held in the 15th Wing conference room from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The luncheon will highlight the history of voting rights and the voter registration process.

Committee adjusts ticket prices for Hickam’s 2012 ‘Air Force Ball’

The Air Force Ball committee has adjusted the ticket pricing for the Air Force's 65th birthday celebration as a way to "Say Thank You to an Airman," the overall theme of this year's event, Sept. 14, at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.

The Air Force Ball committee re-evaluated the previous ticket price structure and found that Airmen had "sticker shock" when it came to buying a ticket for the Air Force Ball. The new tiered ticket prices steers away from the flat $95 ticket price, toward a price that starts at $30 for lower enlisted Airmen.

Staff Sergeant release features 172 Hickam Airmen

More than 13,400 senior airmen were selected for promotion to the rank of staff sergeant, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced Aug. 2.

The boards selected 40.68-percent of the 33,060 eligible senior airmen.

Air Force ‘POLcats’ fuel RIMPAC

The Air Force fuels flight "POLcats" have a saying: "Without POL, pilots are pedestrians."

During the 2012 Rim of the Pacific exercise, the world's largest international maritime exercise, the men and women from the petroleum, oil and lubricant, or fuels flight, are responsible for getting fuel to the aircraft have pumped more than 10 million gallons of fuel into airplanes, making sure to keep pilots flying.

"Each RIMPAC gets bigger and bigger," said Alphonso Parks, Fleet Logistics Center Pearl Harbor fuels department division chief and a retired Air Force chief master sergeant. "At Hickam, it's our primary mission to put gas on airplanes."
