A team of F-22 Raptors and support personnel from the Hawaii Air National Guard's 199th Fighter Squadron and the active duty Air Force's 19th Fighter Squadron departed Hawaii Jan. 17 to participate in a Red Flag exercise at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. The exercise will run through February 1.

The fifth-generation fighter jets departed in small groups over the past few days, and the main body of approximately 140 personnel departed today. The exercise participation follows the F-22's initial operational capability that occurred in November 2012. Red Flag serves as the Hawaiian Raptors' first over-water deployment.

Members of the Hickam Company Grade Officers Council and cadets from University of Hawaii Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps took some time out of their weekend to volunteer at the Judd Hill Ronald McDonald House to support families of ill children.

The officers and cadets worked side by side to clean the main living areas, kitchen and dining room and children's play area. Most of the effort was geared toward cleaning out and organizing the charity's two massive supply sheds.

Commentary: Drawing it all together

As we enter a new year it is appropriate that we reflect not only on the accomplishments of the year we leave behind, but also on setting a vector for the coming year. Recently, I spent a day with Key Squadron, Group and Wing leaders within the 15th Wing, to develop priorities and a vision for our Wing that is focused on what we do and what the 15th Wing actually brings to the fight. The following is a result of our lively discussion that day.

The first order Gen. Carlisle gave to Wing commanders when he took command of Pacific Air Forces was, "you are all warriors and you need to be ready to go to war tonight." In support of this task, we developed an appropriate aim for our Wing:

It was an Oprah-type moment for some military moms in Hawaii.

Forty military mothers and moms-to-be whose spouses are deployed members of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy and Coast Guard, as well as the spouses of several wounded warriors, were honored during Operation Shower "You are my Sunshine," Jan. 8, 2013, at the Ka Makani Recreation Center, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

"It was more than I expected, and I kinda felt like I was on Oprah being showered with so much," said Tech. Sgt. Dina Maldanado, 15th Operations Support Squadron, "I didn't expect all this. It's really nice."

During a double header against Hickam Field Airmen, the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team bombed out against the first team, but exploded against the second.

In back-to-back games against Hickam Force and the Hickam Chief's Group, the Wounded Warriors had a tale of two teams. In the first game against Hickam Force, the Warriors came out a little flat and unable to put runs on the scoreboard, losing 18-1. The second game proved to be a tough outing for the Hickam Chiefs Group as the Warriors took out their frustrations on the ball, winning 22-17.

PACAF commander addresses looming fiscal constraints during Hickam base visit

The Air force is likely to face more budgetary cuts and will have to make some difficult choices over the coming years said Gen. Herbert J. Carlisle, the Pacific Air Forces commander, while speaking to Airmen here Monday.

His central theme was that the continual push to do more with less has reached its limit of sustainability and from the ground up the Air Force will need to look in a new direction towards task prioritization.

"We can no longer do more with less; we already have more missions than we have people," said Carlisle. "We need to do less with less, but the things that we do not do need to be the least important."
