Tech. Sgt. Ronald J. Giannetti, 15th Operations Support Squadron special missions flight attendant instructor, was recently selected as the Pacific Air Forces 2013 Non-commissioned Officer Association Vanguard Award recipient.

The NCOA Vanguard Award, which recognizes enlisted members for acts of heroism that directly result in saving lives or preventing injury, was awarded to Giannetti on Sept. 3, 2012 for his part in rescuing a young girl.

While hiking with his friends on Labor Day, Giannetti noticed a teen girl having difficulty on the trail. He leaned down and offered her his hand and to help pull her up a wall, then continued his trek. On the return leg of the hike, he crossed paths with the girl again. She was sitting on a rock, slumped over and being held up by two friends.

Capt. Matt Adams looked up encouraging his friend and co-worker, Capt. John Barbour, as he clung precariously to a waterfall's cliff, some 25 feet above the rocks and swirling water below. Suddenly, his friend lost grip and fell. Adams knew he must act quickly or the first day of the 2011 could be the last day of his buddy's life.

Adams, then a civil engineer first lieutenant deployed to Joint Task Force-Bravo, Honduras, found himself with a group of Airmen taking a holiday trip to the Central American nation of Costa Rica. Their destination that day was the Nauyaca Waterfalls. Only accessible by foot or horseback, the falls are located at the base of a rainforest trail inside a canyon. The green canopy envelops the area, making it a very attractive tourist destination. With many areas to hike up and around the falls, Barbour climbed an area of cliff to the right of the falls. After a short hike to the top, Adams could see Barbour clinging to the rocky wall and not movin

The 15th Maintenance Group held the 3rd Annual Knucklebuster Ceremony March 1 at Hangar 19 here.

The ceremony, which honored the best-of-the-best for 2012, is an internal award program for Hickam maintainers.

"People are our most important asset and our Airmen are being asked to do more with less," said Master Sgt. Tamara Ormond, 15th Maintenance Operations Squadron. "The dedication to our mission might not be seen from an outside agency where the focus is different so internal recognition is very important. The Airmen need to know that supervisors recognize the long hours and the effort they are giving."
