COMMENTARY: Sexual Assault Awareness Month represents more than awareness

This post was originally published by 15th Wing - 15th Wing Top Stories

Fellow Airman, I'd like to take a moment to discuss a serious issue which severely wounds and scars our Service and its victims, and that is sexual assault. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, but it is not enough to just say we are aware that sexual assault is a problem. Each of us must make an active and personal commitment to treat each other with dignity and respect. We must do everything in our power to prevent this crime from continuing; including intervening to prevent the victimization of our fellow wingmen. We own this problem and we will solve it together. This month should be about taking action, rather than possessing awareness.

Hickam airshow and open house cancelled

This post was originally published by 15th Wing - 15th Wing Top Stories

April 9, 2013 in Hawaii, Hickam Air Force Base by clevine

The Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam airshow and open house, originally slated for 24-25 August, is officially cancelled due to the effects of sequestration.

The Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of the Air Force directed in March that open houses must not incur any cost to the government and that all military flying at installation open houses was prohibited.

"We are very disappointed to have to cancel this opportunity to interact with our local communities," said Col. Johnny Roscoe, 15th Wing commander. "I held off from making the call for as long as possible, but it became abundantly clear that we could not provide both an entertaining and safe environment without incurring costs to the American taxpayer. In the end, we must focus our expenditures on maintaining mission readiness during our new fiscal reality."

A 15th Wing chaplain recently teamed up with members of the 96th Air Refueling Squadron to help make one child's "best week ever" just a little bit better.

Chaplain Lt. Col. Dave Terrinoni, 15 WG deputy command chaplain, felt a sense of obligation to do something when he learned the 13 year old son of his close friends would be visiting Hawaii fulfilling his life's wish courtesy of the Make-a-Wish foundation.

"Nobody likes to see a sick child, and of course I have a vested interest in the family. All I could think about was a 13-year-old child having to be limited in what they could do," he said. "I wanted to help."
