Hurlburt Field, Fla., is home to the Air Force Special Operations Command and the 1st Special Operations Wing and has a long and distinctive history. Hurlburt Field was originally designated as Auxiliary Field No. 9, one of the original small pilot and gunnery training fields built on the sprawling Eglin Air Force Base complex in the 1940s.

Physical fitness is constantly evolving, and the 1st Special Operations Wing is embracing the evolution by offering new equipment and instruction.

The 1st Special Operations Force Support Squadron purchased TRX boxes, which include suspension trainers, rip trainers and an assortment of other equipment for consistent commitment to physical activity enrichment.

"We received the TRX boxes in June," said Master Sgt. Williston, 1st SOFSS, fitness superintendent, "The TRX boxes are now open to Hurlburt Field members to use at their leisure."

Summer is a time for taking vacations, celebrating, and spending time with family. Airmen, however, still have a mission to complete.

Although the apex of summer has come and gone, the sun's rays remain unrelenting.

Airmen can mitigate the dangers of heat casualties by knowing their work environment, drinking plenty of water, and adhering to the work/rest cycles put forth by the Air Force.

According to Air Force Instruction 1-1, Airmen have a duty to maintain physical preparedness and resiliency. This includes being aware of the risks associated with, and knowing how to prevent, heat casualties.

Kerwood Gate open for all base personnel

The Kerwood Gate, located by the base commissary and exchange, is available for all Hurlburt personnel traveling off base.

Base leadership opened the entrance to help relieve traffic congestion at the main gate during the U.S. Highway 98 overpass construction.

According to a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation, the overpass construction is expected to be finished in the spring, at which time base officials will re-evaluate the need for the Kerwood Gate.

Hurlburt pilot receives Daedalian award

An MC-130H pilot received an Air Force-level award Aug. 7 at the 15th Special Operations Squadron auditorium here.

Maj. Jeffery Taylor earned the 2013 Daedalian Exceptional Pilot Award for exceptional courage and leadership in support of air operations throughout Afghanistan.

"The linage of the Daedalians goes all the way back to World War I. It started with pilots who took to the air for the first time in defense of freedom...our whole aim at doing this is to support military aviation," said retired Lt. Gen. Nick Kehoe, National Commander of the Order of the Daedalians.

Whether it's a fishing trip, tubing or just a leisurely trip to the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, there are a lot of things to consider when boating.

According to Florida Statute 327.395, anyone born after January 1, 1988, wishing to operate a water vessel powered by a motor with 10 horsepower or greater must complete a boater education course and receive a boating safety identification card.

A free boating safety course is available online at boatus.org and classroom courses are available at Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation and Commission, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, or at the U.S. Power Squadron.

During the summer, in Florida, motorcyclists are often spotted cruising along the Emerald Coast.

For Air Commandos who take part in the sport, this means brushing up on motorcycle safety and a refresher on the regulations set forth by Air Force Instruction 91-207.

All military personnel, on or off duty, who operate a motorcycle on or off military installations are required to attend and complete an approved motorcycle rider education course before they can operate a motorcycle, according to AFI 91-207.
