Hurlburt Field, Fla., is home to the Air Force Special Operations Command and the 1st Special Operations Wing and has a long and distinctive history. Hurlburt Field was originally designated as Auxiliary Field No. 9, one of the original small pilot and gunnery training fields built on the sprawling Eglin Air Force Base complex in the 1940s.

Capt Matt Jackson, U.S. Air Force Special Operations School course director, has been appointed the summary court officer for the estate of Lt. Col. Daniel Murray,  USAFSOS division chief. All claims for or against the estate of the deceased must be submitted to the summary court officer.

The Commercial Vehicle Inspection Area is scheduled to be moved to the eastside of base located near Gator Lakes Golf course, off of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., beginning Sept. 2, 2014, here.

Several factors drove base leadership's decision to build this new facility.

"This project was put into effect to meet Anti-Terrorism and Force protection requirements mandated by several Air Force and [Department of Defense] directives and to ensure public safety and security," said Joseph Farinash, 1st Special Operations Security Forces Squadron operations officer. "With the current location of the vehicle search area, the base population and certain resources are extremely vulnerable if something were to happen."

The U.S. has seen its fair share of crazy weather this year, and Northwest Florida has not been immune to the adverse effects of Mother Nature.

From the ice storm that debilitated the area to the flooding rain that trapped us in our homes, preparation is crucial in the event of a weather emergency.

This year has marked some of the strangest weather in decades for the local area, according to William Andrus, 1st Special Operations Support Squadron weather flight operations manager.

This message resonated clearly during a recent offsite where the command team got together to assess AFSOC's priorities. After a review of the National Security Strategy, Defense Planning Guidance, Air Force Strategy and U.S. Special Operations Command Strategy, the staff arrived at four command priorities.

The 1st and 27th Special Operations Wings gathered together to begin an Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Aug. 25, 2014.

An EDRE is a rapid deployment exercise for air and ground forces in response to an emergency threat situation.

The overall mission of this EDRE is to conduct a full-mission exercise. The scenario is to insert Special Operations Forces and extract four U.S. Embassy members, a situation that could happen overseas or down range.

Physical fitness is constantly evolving, and the 1st Special Operations Wing is embracing the evolution by offering new equipment and instruction.

The 1st Special Operations Force Support Squadron purchased TRX boxes, which include suspension trainers, rip trainers and an assortment of other equipment for consistent commitment to physical activity enrichment.

"We received the TRX boxes in June," said Master Sgt. Williston, 1st SOFSS, fitness superintendent, "The TRX boxes are now open to Hurlburt Field members to use at their leisure."

Summer is a time for taking vacations, celebrating, and spending time with family. Airmen, however, still have a mission to complete.

Although the apex of summer has come and gone, the sun's rays remain unrelenting.

Airmen can mitigate the dangers of heat casualties by knowing their work environment, drinking plenty of water, and adhering to the work/rest cycles put forth by the Air Force.

According to Air Force Instruction 1-1, Airmen have a duty to maintain physical preparedness and resiliency. This includes being aware of the risks associated with, and knowing how to prevent, heat casualties.

Kerwood Gate open for all base personnel

The Kerwood Gate, located by the base commissary and exchange, is available for all Hurlburt personnel traveling off base.

Base leadership opened the entrance to help relieve traffic congestion at the main gate during the U.S. Highway 98 overpass construction.

According to a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation, the overpass construction is expected to be finished in the spring, at which time base officials will re-evaluate the need for the Kerwood Gate.
