Softball-Bears Win Third Straight NEWMAC Tournament, Secure #5 Seed at NCAAs

Date: 5/10/2012 to 6/8/2012 After winning five straight elimination games, including three on the final day of the tournament for the second straight season, Coast Guard, the three-time defending NEWMAC tournament champions won yet again last Saturday. They received the fifth-seed in the Division III NCAA's Tournament, beating the fourth-seeded Ithaca on Thursday in the opening round at Eastern Connecticut State University. They face Eastern CT on Friday at 1600. Watch the game live here.

Coast Guard Museum Has a New Look; Grand Opening May 12

Date: 4/30/2012 to 6/8/2012 The U.S. Coast Guard Museum will reopen this weekend with a new look and rare artifacts that will be on display for the first time. Housed here at the Academy, the museum has been closed for nearly a year while asbestos was removed from the ceiling and the 4,000-square-foot space was reconfigured. The Open House is May 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The 4,000 square foot museum recently underwent a $449,000 abatement, artifact relocation and renovation and is scheduled to re-open to the public May 12.

Date: 4/30/2012 to 6/8/2012 More than 120 participated in the 5th Annual Otto Graham Golf Classic, held this year at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, FL. "The King" himself made an appearance at the event, where he shared memories from his three years in the Coast Guard. It was while stationed in Cleveland in the early '50s that he met Otto Graham and they become good friends. “I played golf with Otto in Cleveland almost every day,” Palmer said. “He was such a great guy. It's too bad we don't have a lot more like he was.” Click below to view a short video and photos from the event.

Date: 4/20/2012 to 6/8/2012 Brian Thomas '99, a marine salvage engineer for the Coast Guard, was hand picked by Hollywood director James Cameron to be part of his "Titanic Dream Team" to answer the question of what actually caused the Titanic to sink. Thomas' rare and highly specialized career led him to play a key role in the investigation for the National Geographic TV special, "Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron," that aired on April 8.

First Class Cadet David Rehfus was among three cadets to win top honors following a week of debate on the law of armed conflict held in San Remo, Italy from March 26 – 30. The competition, hosted by the International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL), aims to teach cadets the Law of Armed Conflict – a body of customary rules and international treaties designed to prevent unnecessary suffering and escalation of hostilities.
