Holloman Air Force Base will have a memorial service for Tech Sgt. Melissa L. Shroka on Thursday.Shroka, 35, was found dead from a single self-inflected gunshot wound in her Alamogordo home late in the evening on June 11.

There's a splashing deal at Tanker Tails. Throughout June and July, the animal kennel has half off do-it-yourself dog and cat baths.

This is the third time Tanker Tails has presented this bath deal to Team Fairchild since it first opened almost three years ago.

"Since the bath special was such a hit the past two years we presented it, we wanted to continue the tradition this year as well," said Angela Arp, a kennel manager who has been working at Tanker Tails since 2011 and will be departing. "Most people love being able to come in and bathe their pet without making a mess of their own bathroom. A perk for pet owners is we do all the clean-up!"

Nellis Airmen answer call for help

Airmen from the 58th Rescue Squadron, 66th Rescue Squadron and the 57th Wing aided a hiker stranded in the mountains near Bishop, Calif., June 14.

The Mammoth Lakes, Calif., Sherriff's Office contacted the 23rd Wing Command Post at Moody AFB, Ga., and told them the information about the lost hiker. The 58th RQS and 66th RQS were given the mission.

Two HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters assigned to the 66th RQS departed with four crew members on each aircraft along with two 58th RQS pararescuemen per helicopter left Nellis AFB at approximately 7:20 a.m. on a one and a half hour flight to the last known area of the lost hiker.

Working Through Anger workshop to be held at Fairchild

The Balfour Beatty Community Center will be the venue of Working Through Anger, a workshop in the Reconnection Workshops series presented by Walmart and run by the American Red Cross in conjunction with the Airman & Family Readiness Center. The workshop will be held Friday, June 28, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

The workshop is geared toward deployed service members and their readjustment to life on the home front. Families are of course a part of that equation.

"We are hearing more and more about Post-Traumatic Stress and other emotions that were previously kept quiet," said Breezy Tottenhoff, AmeriCorps volunteer to the Red Cross with Service to Armed Forces. "Working Through Anger is a workshop geared toward families and service members who are having a difficult time readjusting to life at home. The 99th Dental Squadron and the Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program here are seeking patients not normally seen at active-duty dental clinics for a year-long residency program.

The residency program is for new dentist out of school who are undergoing advanced training on selected applicants who have dental problems a military dentist wouldn't normally take care of.

Applicants must be either retired military, military retiree family members or active-duty family members with a combination of at least three of the following dental conditions; root canals, crowns, fillings, gum disease, or need complete dentures.

Enid Chamber, Team Vance host local kids to Camp Tomahawk

Vance hosted a two-week summer camp for local children June 3-14 on base.

Camp Tomahawk, a free summer camp for children between 9 and 11 years old who might not otherwise get to attend a camp, is funded by the Enid Chamber of Commerce.

This year is the 35th time Camp Tomahawk has been held.

Team Vance provided 70 volunteers who took shifts taking the children out and about and watching over them during the night.

"We managed to raise about $6,000 for the camp," said Rynn Day, the membership and special events coordinator for the Enid Chamber. "It costs about $150 to send a child to the camp."

Shaw Air Force Base held an inactivation ceremony for the 20th Maintenance Operations Squadron here, June 14.

The 20th MOS and the maintenance operations squadrons Air Force wide were not deactivated but inactivated for an undetermined amount of time.

"There is a difference between a squadron being inactivated and deactivated," explains Maj. Michael Fields, 20th MOS commander. "When a squadron is deactivated it means that the squadron will never be able to stand back up. However when a squadron is inactivated the colors are stored at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Museum, Ohio, and when the Air Force needs the squadron again it is reactivated."

Laughlin's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Stand-down briefings began June 14 and are scheduled to continue through June 19.

Instituted by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel in mid-May, The SAPR Stand-down is designed to give commanders across all service branches the chance to confront the problem of sexual assaults in the military.

"Sexual assault will not be tolerated at this wing," said Col. Brian Hastings, 47th Flying Training Wing commander. "Sexual assault endangers our fellow airmen, pollutes our core values and violates the sacred trust of those who serve and whom we serve."

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the new Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command CONUS Annex here June 17.

The JCA, as it is known, will help the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command meet a congressional mandate to achieve identification on 200 remains per year beginning in 2015.

"Today's opening of the JCA represents another positive step and further commitment of our nation's steadfast dedication to bring home our fallen heroes and return them to their families," said Maj. Gen. Kelly K. McKeague, JPAC commander, who presided over the ceremony. "This new facility will provide benefits that will allow us to grow on a number of levels."
