217 TRS Commander leads Texas Military Forces District 10

When disaster strikes Texas, the Governor may call upon the Texas Military Forces (TXMF) - Army National Guard, Air National Guard and State Guard - to work hand-in-hand with the state's Department of Public Safety and assist with emergency operations under the Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) program.

To facilitate emergency relief efforts, Texas is divided into 22 Disaster Districts. Each district has emergency management elements trained, equipped and organized under the National Incident Management System. Goodfellow's 217th Training Squadron Commander here, Lt. Col. Jim Marrs, was appointed this month as the Texas Disaster District 10 Commander. Out of the 22 Disaster Districts, only three are commanded by Air National Guardsmen.

Dental Squadron to host ‘Little Teeth, Big Smiles’ clinic

The 86th Dental Squadron will host its annual Saturday walk-in clinic for children up to age 10 from 8 a.m. to noon April 30. The clinic will be held at the Ramstein Dental Clinic, Bldg 301. Services will include well-baby exams (up to age 4), dental examinations and cleaning (ages 5 to 10), and custom mouth guards for contact sports. Oral hygiene education stations will also be set up. Appointments are on a first come, first served basis. For details, call Master Sgt. Eric Anderson at 479-2210 or 06371-46-2210.

Job Shadow Day is spearheaded by the National Job Shadow Coalition and is an academically motivating activity designed to give students the unique opportunity of an up-close look at various careers.

Beginning with a nationwide kickoff in February and continuing through April, students may "shadow" workplace mentors to experience a typical day on the job. Fortunately, the Job Shadow Day project invites students to witness firsthand how the skills learned in school relate to the work environment. Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe staff along with their 86th Airlift Wing counterparts and numerous military and civilian organizations will observe Job Shadow Day April 19. Job Shadow Day is also referred to as "Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day."

The telltale signs that Fiesta and its unique springtime San Antonio experience is underway are defined by the roadside wild flowers, trees spreading pollen and the smell of a freshly mowed lawn.

Those signs also signal Lackland's participation in Fiesta, which continues through April 17. About 1,000 people representing the base will take part in honoring Fiesta 2011with its annual parade Wednesday, an event open to the public. Between 1,500 and 2,000 people are expected to attend.

‘Dauntless’ holds competition for the best

Eighteen Soldiers from the Army Reserve descended upon the Maj. John P. Pryor Armed Forces Reserve Center at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., to kick off the third annual 99th Regional Support Command Best Warrior Competition.

This year's competition is being overseen by Sgt. Maj. Jesus DeJesus, interim sergeant major for the 99th RSC.

The Soldiers who have been selected to undergo the grueling 5- day competition are:

One of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst's newest mission partners, the Navy Reserve Fixed Wing Logistics Squadron 52 Taskmasters, witnessed the 87th Air Base Wing's steadfast commitment supporting global expeditionary operations and quickly learned the truth behind the 305th Air Mobility Wing's Can Do attitude prevalent throughout the nation's only tri-service joint base.

When a 9.0 magnitude earthquake shook the Japanese coastline, Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 52 was forward deployed in Atsugi, Japan and was immediately prepared to provide much-needed aid to the island nation. Despite the devastation, VR-52 and the Navy's Ft. Worth-based Fleet Logistics Support Wing stayed in place and began round-the-clock flight operations transporting food, water, supplies and support equipment across Japan's hard hit Miyagi region.

The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System partners with Wilford Hall Medical Center's Hearing Center of Excellence in a mutually beneficial agreement that improves their patients' care.

According to their website, CTVHCS is a patient-centered integrated health care organization for veterans providing excellent health care, research and education. In fiscal year 2009, CTVHCS treated more than 80,000 unique patients and provided more than 9,000 inpatient days of care in the hospital. CTVHCS collaborates with Fort Hood, the largest military base in the world with the biggest troop commitment to Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Holy Week is most definitely a very sacred time of the year. It is the period of time where we remember and walk in the feet of Jesus to commemorate the last week of His life on this earth. The Lenten season of sacrifice and self-denial is about to come to an end, but this Holy Week is extremely important for all Christians, because these are the days leading up to the great Easter Feast. It begins with Palm Sunday and culminates with the celebration of the Triduum (Latin for Three Days): Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. The main focus of the week is the Passion (suffering out of Love) and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the events that led up to it.

Coast Guardsmen who normally patrol the high seas for drug runners or environmental hazards were the first behind the wheel of the latest high-tech combat convoy simulator addition at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

The U.S. Coast Guard's Redeployment Assistance Inspection Detachment, Team 13 were the first military unit using the newly-fielded Reconfigurable Vehicle Tactical Trainer simulator, in a training exercise simulating an Afghanistan defensive combat situation, April 2.

DOD to drop Social Security numbers from ID cards

Beginning June 1, Social Security numbers on military identification cards will begin to disappear, said Maj. Monica M. Matoush, a Pentagon spokeswoman.

The effort is part of a larger plan to protect service members and other DOD identification card holders from identity theft, officials said.

Criminals use Social Security numbers to steal identities, allowing them to pillage resources, establish credit or to hijack credit cards, bank accounts or debit cards.

Wounded warriors receive new companions

Through the combined efforts of the Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston and the Carolina Canines for Service organization, two wounded veterans were presented with their new canine companions during a ceremony at NAVCONBRIG, March 31.

Since its inception in 1996, Carolina Canines has successfully placed more than 41 service dogs, valued at more than $1.6 million, with disabled service members nationwide. Since partnering with the NAVCONBRIG aboard Joint Base Charleston-Weapons Station, the program has placed four dogs with wounded warriors while successfully employing prisoners to develop marketable skills.
