FORT BENNING, Ga. (May 16, 2012) -- The 2012 Best Warrior competition got under way Monday as 16 Soldiers endure a four-day event that will determine the Maneuver Center of Excellence Drill Sergeant of the Year, NCO of the Year and Soldier of the Year. All three will be announced Friday at an awards ceremony at the Benning Conference Center, and each winner will have the opportunity to represent the MCoE at the TRADOC level competitions.

FORT BENNING, Ga. (May 16, 2012) -- A Fort Benning Soldier has been named the Army's top junior enlisted paralegal specialist. Staff Sgt. Raymond Richardson Jr. of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, is the 2012 Sergeant Eric L. Coggins Award for Excellence recipient. He was honored Friday during a ceremony at the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate. Next month, Richardson will receive the award from Lt. Gen. Dana Chipman, the Judge Advocate General, at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

For on-post residents at The Villages of Benning, when rodents cause damage in or around the house, it's time to put in a work order. "Just like you call in someone to fix your dishwasher, you can call if you're having squirrel issues," said Keith Lovejoy, housing chief with the Residential Communities Initiative.

Columbus brothers and co-owners of Masterbuilt Manufacturing, John and Don McLemore unveiled a cake the shape and size of an M1A2 Abrams tank Thursday at the basic training graduation of two Armor units on Harmony Church. Part of the pilot episode of a TV show called Big Food, the McLemores constructed the strawberry shortcake in three days. They said it's a tribute to Soldiers. The pilot is slated to air in late July or early August on Country Music Television.

If Dremiel Byers and Spenser Mango win medals for Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2012 Olympic Games this summer in London, they may look back on two weeks of CrossFit training as a key to their success. Byers and Mango, along with fellow wrestlers from the World Class Athlete Program, paid a visit to Fort Benning from Colorado Springs, Colo., to train at the newly renovated Audie Murphy Fitness Center. Out of six available berths, Byers and Mango are two of three WCAP wrestlers who will represent Team USA in London.

30th AG Battalion (Reception) was dedicated to Lt. Gen. Timothy Maude, who was killed Sept. 11, 2001, during the attack on the Pentagon. All Soldiers entering the Army for training at Fort Benning, one station unit or basic, will process through the Maude Reception Complex. Maude's wife, Teri, said her husband was all about Soldiers and the complex being named for him would "tickle" him.

"I haven't missed a meal or heard a shot fired in anger, and my dad reminded me of that every morning," said Benjamin Patton, a documentary filmmaker in New York. "I'm able to do the things I do because of folks like you, so the first thing I'd like to do is just say 'thank you.'" Benjamin Patton said he never served himself but was raised in an Army household. He now works with Soldiers affected by post-traumatic stress disorder and recently wrote a book titled, "Growing Up Patton: Reflections on Heroes, History and Family Wisdom."
